Pipex was an English company that operated a global internet service provider. They were among the first to enable file transfers, electronic mail, and web browsing for businesses around the world.
Pipex was founded in 1986 by Michael Dummett.
Pipex operated until they lost an appeal against a High Court ruling in September 2003 which forced the company into administration. The judgment by Mr. Justice Walker found that Pipex had breached its contract with BTI, their major customer, who had been paying them £3m per month
The firm was dissolved on 10 November 2003 after filing for bankruptcy protection.
Without their service, many businesses had to close down or move overseas to continue operations as Pipex was one of the only providers who could provide connectivity internationally
In the 1960s, a company called pipex was established in London. The company provided a telephone service and became a world-famous provider of international communication.
In 1990, the company merged with a different firm which had been founded in 1968 and renamed itself to Worldcom. In addition to telephone communication, it also offered computer services and networks to enterprises around the world.
In 1997, it was bought by MCI which then changed its name shortly after into Worldcom again. In 2002, Worldcom filed for bankruptcy due to financial issues and other difficulties which eventually led to the sale of its assets.
Pipex was the world’s first internet service provider. They set up their headquarters in London in the 1980s and became one of the largest ISPs in UK with 120,000 subscribers. When Pipex became bankrupt in 2001, there was no other company to take over their position.
Pipex was started by Professor Robert Gower and Dr David Goldsmith who were able to establish an international communications network using satellites and radio waves. They used this network to relay messages between two computers on opposite sides of the planet which wasn’t possible before without high cost or long delays.
